[Video] Connect iPhone to Linux with KDE-Connect
#1
Video
Hey all...

The connection and remote control tool KDE Connect is now available for iPhones and iPads – for beta testing. KDE Connect iOS is intended to enable interaction between Apple devices as well as Linux and Windows PCs – via the local network.

A macOS version of KDE Connect is also in development; it currently has to be compiled by yourself. The Apple systems are already well linked via various handoff functions of the manufacturer.

Connection between smartphone and PC

About the open source KDE Connect For example, the contents of the clipboard can be exchanged or files can be transferred from the smartphone to the notebook or desktop – and vice versa. The iPhone can also serve as an input device for the PC, for example to move the mouse pointer during presentations or to remotely control media playback on a laptop. It is also possible to execute commands from the smartphone on the PC or to play a sound on the smartphone in order to find it again.

the iOS version of KDE Connect is not yet available in the App Store. It is available for download via Apple’s Testflight beta test environment, a device with iOS or iPadOS 15 is required.

Users have to expect the usual restrictions on iOS: There is no common way of executing such background processes in iOS, write the developers – the system is designed for app control in the foreground. Accordingly, KDE Connect only works properly on iPhones and iPads if the app is actively used; it is closed in the background. The remote execution of commands is currently not working properly, it can also lead to various crashes, it is said.

Beta test and other plans

In the public beta test, they want to focus on general functionality and stability, write the developers. In addition to the translation into languages other than English, more extensive adjustments to notifications and file transfer are also planned – here we are also hoping for help from the community. A possible Apple Watch app and the porting of KDE Connect to macOS as a Catalyst app are still marked with a question mark.

I do try to help where I can, when I can.
I do this on my own, so I might not have all the answers.
